About Project
The explorations project I had to base my work on a chosen photoshop artist: I chose Christophe Huet. Using his methods and style of photoshop I had to create between 6 – 15 images. Then put these images in to a slideshow with a soundscape in the background which had to run for the duration of 1 minute 30 seconds. I created 14 images including the transition, 13 photoshopped: 10 based on Huet’s work.
The images used were: photographic images of me, resources of the internet & designs I created in either photoshop or illustrator.
The sounds I used were: voice recordings of Shant Younki (which were recorded in the sound studio at Hertfordshire University), ambience sounds + sound effects from the internet, sounds from YouTube (Superman + TV static) & audio from an old home movie.
The programs I used to create this project were: Adobe Illustrator CS4, Adobe Photoshop CS4, Adobe Audition 3.0 & Adobe Premiere Pro CS4.
About images
The images came out better than I expected, there were a few photos which were easy and I managed to get them done in 5 minutes or less, however there were a few which took up to an hour to create. My technique was to use big files and shrink them down, cut around myself to add in to the master file, smoothed the edges, changed the lighting and using the tools photoshop provides adjust where the light hits the body. I also used the adjustment tools a lot so that the exposure of each image worked with the background. I used a lot of over laying for the image textures. For the shadows I copied the image of myself, turned the lightness to 0 then added a zoom blur and changed the opacity and fill; then rearranged the shape and size to create the shadows.
About Sounds
The sounds I used were mostly taken from the internet then mixed in with audio which were recordings of Shant Younki. For the narrations I had to slow some of it down where Shant spoke too fast in some bits. In the transition and Motorola image where I appear nowhere I added an echo to symbolise the fact that there wouldn’t be ambience just a big space of nothing. I also added a small echo for the mind is angry at me scene as well as lowering the pitch. Most of the sounds I took from the internet I also improved using Adobe Audition.
Conclusion
The end result from all the work I put in to this project I feel was pretty good. My ideas worked well to the style of Christophe Huet and the sounds compliment the images well in the sequence.
I did have some minor problems with getting some of the images to come out as I wanted and struggled finding the right sounds I needed: but by improvising finding alternative sounds and editing the image differently they worked well.
Entry 7. Detailed descriptions of images

To view images go to entry 6.
Image 1
This image idea was copying Huet’s mirror change images, where in his photos someone will see a different reflection looking back at them.
I used this idea to show me in informal clothes with a reflection of me in a suit. This refers to the saying not to judge a book by its cover and that although someone isn’t dressed smart they can in fact be smarter than they appear.
For ambient sounds I found the sounds of cloth to assist the image of a tie being adjusted, as well as the sound of a clock ticking to assist the illusion of a living room ambience.
Image 2
Using the idea of Christophe Huet’s “T-Home” images I created this image for the story transition to move from my university home to a random location. This was a fun image to create and was equally challenging to adjust the lighting and add a shadow in line with the lighting.
The two ambient sounds are off seagulls and a beach to create the illusion that I am really there.
Image 3
This image was based on Huet’s “Iphone addict” image. I introduced something personal; me being a huge superman fan I chose to incorporate him. As the surface is very different to Huet’s image, I had to ensure the graffiti would be different to match the texture of the surface it is on.
The superman logo was created using adobe illustrator then imported in to photoshop over the top of a wall. The wall originally was brighter and had a plaque on it. Using the healing tool I removed the plaque and using the saturation and variations tool changed the colour of the wall.
By rubbing out parts of the logo and adding noise I managed to give it a faded + granule effect as though its old graffiti wearing off. I also cropped it to match the edges of the parts of the wall which stick out.
For the sounds I added a street ambient noise as well as the theme tune from the 1978 superman movie.
Image 4
During the transition from the last image you hear a cartoony car crash which then links up to this image. I discovered an image online made by Christophe Huet where you see two cars sticking of some walls down an alley way. So for this I created the same thing however seeing the car from the rear view stuck in a wall.
As well as narrations the sounds are ambience of a street again (different from the previous street ambience).
Image 5
Christophe Huet has a number of images of homeless people sinking in to the ground which the only meaning I could make from those images was that they spend so much time on the streets that they become a part of the streets by sinking in to them (I’m probably wrong).
For my image just like image 2: this works as a transition to bring me back to the house. This was created using an overlay of water on the floor and using the rubber to rub away some of my feet.
The sound for this was described as “Drowning – Water/Quicksand” on the website I downloaded from; it sounds more like bubbles in water. But the sound works well with the image, as the ground appears to liquefy. The other sound is more street ambience.
Image 6
Underlayer for rip (Photoshoped paper with stuff about me)
This idea was used based on Huet’s Motorola images where someone has ripped their own photo using a Motorola phone.
I used a few different paper textures for the rip itself and the background. The paper under the rip has a list of my personal interests (however you can’t really make out anything from that list).
There are no ambient sounds as the idea is that I am nowhere in existence: because of this the narratives are echoed slightly. There is also a ripping during the transition from Image 5 – 6.
Image 7
Image 7 – 9 are not based on Christophe Huet: they are transitions to Image 10.
This was a photo of me and my friends having pre drinks befor
e going clubbing, 5 of the people missed out on the photo, so as a joke I photoshopped them in, it was a quick job so it isn’t very well done and you can clearly see who was added in. However I decided to add this in to my project for the TV showing memories transitions.
Using a photo of my TV I cut out the screen and fixed the edges then added in the photo giving it a noise effect to show the fuzz of off a TV. I introduced lighting around the frame of the TV as well.
For sound I managed to come across a night club ambience.
Image 8
Just like the previous image I used the TV template I made to create TV static effect for the transition between image 7 and image 9.
The sound introduced to this image is TV static feedback.
Image 9
As I dedicated this project to my Nan I found it necessary to include a happy memory of my Nan in these transitions. At my brother’s wedding we were all having a cigar outside the hall, when someone was about to take a picture, out of nowhere by herself Nan came around the corner, and my brother’s Matt & Jason shouted to Nan to join us in the photo: which she enjoyed. To highlight my Nan I lowered the saturation of the whole group slightly, but increased the exposure of my Nan so that she stuck out.
The ambience here is a group of people.
Image 10
This image was based on the same principles used in Huet’s discovery channel images: instead of it being the discovery channel I made it so I am watching my memories.
The background sound is from an old home video of my friend Paul playing about with another friend Anton whilst I recorded, I took the sound from the video and put it in the background as the narrator says “the only thing on TV is my memories”.
Image 11
Huet has different versions of this image; one of the versions is a skinny man ripping his skin off to reveal muscle. Using the same style I created an image where it shows me pulling my skin off to reveal a tattoo
As well as mimicking one of Christophe Huets images this image has a hidden meaning: love is skin deep and no matter if a loved one is gone they will always be there. This image is in memory of my Nan, it shows a tattoo being revealed under a skin (the edges the tattoo fades underneath skin). The tattoo says “R.I.P Nan 26/03/11”.
The symbol of the tattoo also represents the meaning. No matter how painful it is initially to get a tattoo done it is permanently there: which is the meaning I wanted to incorporate that no matter how painful it is for me losing my Nan; her love is permanently there.
This was one of the hardest images to create; the tattoo is done in illustrator for the clarity. Then using a texture of a skin which was photoshopped in to the hand, the same photo was on a layer underneath changing the variations to create the pink raw skin effect. Using a paint tool I went over the edges to make the appearance of cut skin.
The sound introduced with the narration is the sound of a heart beating to symbolise love in memories over the physical pain.
Image 12
This Image is almost exactly like the first image, however this is more negative: the reflection is someone pointing and shouting at someone who is confused. The narrations from the person in the mirror suggest hostility: to support this I introduced the sound of a plate smashing.
As it is the same room as the first picture the same ambient clock ticking can be heard.
Image 13
This was a more playful Image. Huet has created images of everyday people with their heads have grown. I did the exact same thing constructed with two different images of myself.
The sound is off a balloon inflating.
The End
The ending transition is cutting to black and you hear bedsprings to symbolise someone waking up, and narration reflecting on the whole dream.

Entry 5. Photographs

When it came to taking photos I brought a tri-pod and spent a day using a timer setting on my digital camera to take photos of myself.
I changed my clothes a few times to incorporate the surrealism in the dream subtly that your mind wanders when you dream and the details will vary. This is also why I was specific when getting my landscape images; that the weather was different in each one: whether it was the lighting of the shot or if it was cloudy or sunny.
For some of the images where you need to be in a specific place; I used electric tape to mark where I was standing. This was used specifically in the mirror photos.
Before shooting images of myself I would shoot a picture of where I would be standing so I can get a rough idea of where I need to be and what the settings will need to be on the camera before taking the shot. I took at least 4 or 5 photos per image so that I could choose the best one.
All of the photos were took either inside my University house (13 Holliers way) or in the front or back garden so I could use natural lighting.
Some of the pictures, where they didn’t work with natural lighting (indoor photos), I set up a desk lamp to help: I tried to avoid using the flash feature on my camera to make them look less like a photographed image.
